Three Kinds of Buford Property

Tree Service in Buford means working across three very different settings. The old downtown grew up around the railroad and the tannery. Lake Lanier's shoreline and Buford Dam sit on the northern edge. And a lot of newer subdivisions have been built around the Mall of Georgia and out toward the Hall County line. Each comes with different trees and different problems.

Downtown and the Leather City years

Buford was incorporated in 1872, named for Algernon Sidney Buford of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway. It became known as the Leather City after R.H. Allen opened a harness shop and tannery in 1868 and his brother Bona Allen founded the Bona Allen Company in 1873. The tannery ran until a 1981 fire. Houses built in that era often have very large oaks and pecans with limbs over roofs and power drops. Those trees deserve careful pruning and regular checks for decay, and when one has to come down, the work is usually done in small pieces because the lots are close together.

Lake side

Part of Lake Lanier and the Lake Lanier Islands fall within Buford, and the city draws its water from the lake. Lots near the lake tend to slope toward the water and are wooded with pines and hardwoods. On the lake, the shoreline below private lots is federally managed, so cutting there is not a homeowner decision. On your own slope, trees are usually lowered in sections to avoid rolling logs downhill.

On the divide

The city limits lie about 4.5 miles west of the Eastern Continental Divide, and elevations run above 1,000 feet. The higher, drier ridges are where pines are most likely to suffer in drought, and drought-stressed pines are the ones bark beetles go after.

Newer subdivisions around the Mall of Georgia

Much of Buford's growth has been in newer subdivisions on its south and east sides. Those lots often have builder-planted maples, crape myrtles and Leyland cypress plus a strip of original woods at the back. The planted trees need early structural pruning so they do not grow into gutters and siding, and the woods at the back often have dead pines that should come down before they fall toward a fence or a neighbor's house.

Parks and trails

Bogan Park has walking trails, sports fields and an aquatic center, and more than 7 miles of trails connect to the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center and the Mall of Georgia, including part of the Ivy Creek Greenway. Homes that back up to these areas often have trees on their side that lean out toward the open space.

Common work around Buford

  • Pruning and deadwood removal on big downtown oaks and pecans
  • Removing dead or leaning pines on lake and ridge lots
  • Raising limbs over driveways in newer subdivisions
  • Stump grinding and storm cleanup

Buford Questions

Can I clear trees on the Lake Lanier shore behind my house?

Only trees on your own property. The shoreline below most private lots is federally managed and needs approval to cut. We confirm the line before quoting.

Our pecan drops big limbs. Can it be saved?

Often. Pecans shed limbs when they carry long, heavy branches or have decay. Reducing those limbs and removing deadwood usually helps.

Do you work in the Hall County part of Buford?

Yes. We cover the whole city, including the northern section in Hall County.

Can you take out dead pines at the back of my lot?

Yes. We drop them where there is room or lower them in pieces near fences and houses, then grind stumps if you want.

Do you work on the older streets near downtown?

Yes. Close-set houses and overhead lines there usually mean climbing the tree and lowering wood in short pieces.

Can you clear a fallen tree from my driveway after a storm?

Yes. Once any power lines are confirmed safe, we cut the tree off the driveway first so you can get out, then come back to finish the cleanup if needed.
