Acreage Changes the Job
Most Tree Service work in Milton happens on property you would not see in a typical subdivision: two to ten acres, a long gravel drive, a barn, board fencing and a tree line between pasture and woods. Milton was incorporated in 2006 out of rural north Fulton, and its zoning still favors larger, septic-served lots that suit horse farms. That means the trees we deal with are often bigger, farther from the road, and closer to fences, paddocks and drain fields than in-town jobs.
Milton's 15-inch rule
Unlike some neighbors, Milton requires a removal permit on residential lots for any tree 15 inches in diameter at breast height or larger, and for dogwoods, redbuds and similar small canopy trees once they reach 8 inches. Any tree in a landscape, zoning or stream buffer also needs one, whatever its size. The application goes to the City Arborist and asks for the homeowner's and tree company's contact details, a sketch of the trees and a list of species and sizes. Depending on lot size, zoning and existing canopy, the city may ask you to replant.
We fill in the tree company side of that application with you and measure every tree on the list so the sizes are right.
Typical Milton requests
- Clearing storm-fallen trees off board or wire fences before horses get out
- Removing dead pines along pasture edges and drives
- Raising limbs over long driveways so trucks, trailers and fire apparatus clear them
- Pruning shade trees around barns and run-in sheds
- Keeping trees and stumps away from septic drain lines, where heavy equipment and big root systems both cause trouble
- Grinding stumps in pasture so mowers do not hit them
When storms hit the back roads
During Helene on Sept. 27, 2024, a large uprooted tree closed Mountain and Wilke roads and damaged utility lines, downed trees blocked part of Thompson Road between Francis and Hopewell roads before daybreak, and crews cleared two trees on Providence Road. Those are typical Milton storm scenes: tall trees on road shoulders and fence lines, long distances, and power lines strung through woods. If a tree is on a line, call the utility first and keep people and animals back.
Getting equipment onto large lots
Wet pasture and septic fields do not hold up well under loaded trucks. On most Milton jobs we plan the route in during the estimate: where the chipper can sit, whether wood can be left in a pile for firewood, and whether a section of fence needs to come down for access. That is all written into the quote.
Call (770) 758-8959 or send the form with photos. We will walk the property with you and put the plan in writing.
Milton at a Glance
- Permit threshold. Milton requires a tree removal permit on residential lots for any tree 15 inches DBH or larger, and for small canopy trees such as dogwood or redbud at 8 inches and up.
- Buffers. Any tree inside a landscape, zoning or stream buffer in Milton needs a permit, and the City Arborist may require replacement trees based on lot size, zoning and canopy.
- Rural zoning. Milton's zoning has favored larger, septic-dependent lots suited to horse farms, and the city plan divides it into eight character areas including Birmingham, Crabapple and Sweetapple.
- Helene road closures. On Sept. 27, 2024, an uprooted tree closed Mountain and Wilke roads until 3 p.m., and downed trees blocked Thompson and Providence roads earlier that morning.
- Large-lot ownership. Census QuickFacts lists a median owner-occupied home value of $789,000 and a 72.5% owner-occupied rate for 2020-2024.

Milton Questions
How do I know if my tree is 15 inches?
Wrap a tape around the trunk 4.5 feet above the ground and divide by 3.14. A trunk around 47 inches in circumference is right at 15 inches. We measure every tree on the list during the estimate.
Can you take down trees without tearing up my pasture?
We plan the route in before the job and avoid wet ground and septic fields where we can. Sometimes waiting for a dry week is the right call, and we will tell you when it is.
A tree fell on my fence overnight. What first?
If wires are involved, call the power company and keep animals away. Otherwise, secure the animals and call us. We cut the tree off the fence so it can be repaired, and haul or stack the wood.
Can I keep the wood for firewood?
Yes. Many Milton owners want logs cut to length and left near the barn. Tell us at the estimate so the quote reflects less hauling.
